Two new wildfires drew the attention of fire crews in the Northland on Saturday -- one in the Embarrass area, and another near Finland.

The Northland FireWire reported that "numerous" fire departments were battling a wildfire near the intersection of state Highway 135 and St. Louis County Highway 21 near Embarrass, with a ground and air attack on the flames. There reportedly were some evacuations in the area, as well as road closures.

In Finland, a fire was burning about 2 miles north of Finland in the vicinity of Hut 2 Road, off state Highway 1, Finland Fire Chief Pete Walsh said. He said it was not clear exactly how large the fire was Saturday evening, but offered a rough estimate of about 100 acres.

Walsh said there were no evacuations underway, but there were "a lot of airplanes in the air right now" dropping water on the fire.

Meanwhile, crews continued Saturday to work on extinguishing a fire a few miles east of Hoyt Lakes that flared up Friday night. Cooler conditions on Saturday helped in those efforts, though conditions remained extremely dry and there were gusty winds. A red flag warning remains in effect for much of the region.
