More than a foot of snow falls in parts of NW Wisconsin

Lake-enhanced snow blanketed parts of Northwestern Wisconsin with more than a foot of snow on Friday.

Strong north winds moving across the warmer water of Lake Superior sparked the heavy snow along the South Shore. The National Weather Service relayed spotter reports Friday night of 13 inches of snow at Sand Bay near Bayfield, 12 inches near Cornucopia, 11.2 inches in the higher terrain near Washburn, 9.2 inches in Ironwood, 8.5 inches at Gile and 4.8 inches in Oulu — with snow still falling in most of those locations.

A winter storm warning remained in effect for Bayfield, Ashland and Iron counties through Saturday morning.

The heavy snow caused some school districts to close for the day Friday, or dismiss students early as the snow continued to pile up.

There will be some sunshine but also a chance for light snow in the Northland on Saturday, with high temperatures in the 30s. After a few more days of below-normal temperatures, a warmup into the 50s is forecast for later next week.
