Hermantown Middle School students Trinity Sundbom (from left), Tori Bates and Odessa Kennedy help National Weather Service meteorologist Kevin Huyck inflate a weather balloon at the school on Wednesday morning. Funded by a grant, the flight gathered information on temperature, dew point, wind speed, barometric pressure, altitude and position along the balloon’s flight path. After the balloon’s instruments are recovered the students will be able to study the data. “It’s a great way to learn about weather in a hands-on way,” NWS meteorologist Carol Christenson said. During its two-hour flight the balloon encountered winds of up to 80 mph, coming down in Iron County. In addition to its other instruments the balloon carried a GoPro camera. “It’s going to be so much fun to watch the video,” Christenson said. (Steve Kuchera / skuchera@duluthnews.com)
