A $250,000 state grant will help redevelop a 2.7-acre site at the corner of 21st Avenue East and London Road in Duluth.
The Duluth Economic Development Authority will use the money to demolish existing structures on the property and to install public infrastructure that will support the construction of a new six-story, 148-unit apartment building to be dubbed Harbor Bay Flats.
The developer, Harbor Bay Real Estate Advisors, will match the grant monies. The total project is expected to cost about $36 million and will include 13,000 square feet of retail space in addition to apartment units.
The grant was one of five announced Tuesday by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development through its Redevelopment Grant Program. The assistance is earmarked to help communities cover the costs of demolishing blighted buildings on sites in preparation for future development.
Since its inception in 1998, the program has awarded more than $64 million to projects across the state, opening the way for the redevelopment of 1,220 acres of land.
