In the Gowns of Glensheen exhibit, guests will see smashing party dresses, ravishing fur coats, and first-class gowns displayed among the stunning interiors of the 39-room mansion, according to a news release from Jane Pederson, marketing manager of the historic estate.
As a special offering to summer-touring guests, the Gowns of Glensheen exhibit will be included in guest’s tour price for no additional fee.
The gowns have been in the drawers of the Glensheen collection for years and are making their long-awaited debut to the public this summer.
One of the ways research for the Gowns of Glensheen was completed was through diving into Duluth News Tribune archives. Weddings were once reported as full articles in the daily newspaper. Even articles about when big names (such as the Congdons) picked a wedding date or went shopping for their wedding dress.
Historic Duluth News Tribune articles also often mentions Glensheen hosting teas, benefits and dance parties. Women would wear a fun party dress like one of the dresses in the exhibit to such an event at Glensheen. Guests will also see coats made of the same fur that kings would wear and a tux of Chester Congdon’s. Many of the fabrics or embellishments on the pieces in this exhibit are made from animal fur or feathers. One dress even has ostrich feathers.
While the gowns are on display now, the exhibit officially launches on Friday, June 14. The exhibit will be available daily for tour guests during regular tour hours through Labor Day, Sept. 2, 2019.
In July, guests will have more chances to experience the gorgeous gowns. Extended summer tour hours start July 1 and run through Aug. 24.
