Palkie leads UMD

Sophomore Liz Palkie of Carlton won the women's five-kilometer race Saturday to help Minnesota Duluth place second at the Campus Quest season-opening meet on the UMD campus.

Palkie was first in a field of 95 in 19 minutes, 8.8 seconds and St. Scholastica freshman Julia Curry was second in 19:21.4. The top Wisconsin-Superior finisher was sophomore Jenna Halverson, 17th in 20:25.9.

Michigan Tech won the team title with 38 points and UMD had 40.

Bulldogs win streak at 9

Minnesota Duluth topped West Texas A&M 30-21, 30-28, 29-31, 30-24 Saturday in the UMD Classic at Romano Gym as senior Kari Wolford led the offensive with 21 kills and 19 digs. Junior setter Katie Gangelhoff had 59 set assists.

Wolford's now has 1,011 career kills. UMD's Sarah Wyffels added 13 kills and Vicky Braegelmann and Danielle Beckstrand each had 12 .

The No. 4-ranked Bulldogs (11-1), who have won nine straight matches, face Concordia-St. Paul at 7 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul.

* Bulldogs named to the all-tournament team were Gangelhoff, Wolford, Wyffels and Braegelmann, who was voted tournament MVP.

Gustavus sweeps Saints

Gustavus Adolpus College beat St. Scholastica 30-24, 30-16, 30-24 Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.

St. Scholastica's Kati Berscheit had 23 set assists while Shawna Varichak had 12 kills and Amy Thompson 10 kills. Bridget Burtzel paced Gustavus with 35 set assists.

* The Saints (1-7) also lost to St. Benedict 30-13, 30-26, 30-24. St. Scholastica is home at 4 p.m. Friday against Viterbo.

UWS 2-2 for weekend

Wisconsin-Superior went 2-2 in four matches over the weekend at the Sugar Loaf Classic, hosted by St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn.

UWS beat Marian and Loras, and lost to Wartburg and Luterh.

Courtney Stach led UWS with 52 kills and 42 digs, while Anne LeBard had 30 kills and 43 digs.

Alichia Fairchild recorded 146 set assists while defensive specialist Samantha Blake had 75 digs.

UWS men fall in OT

Wisconsin-Superior lost 4-3 in overtime Saturday to Viterbo in a men's match in Superior.

The Yellowjackets led 3-1, helped by goals from Bryan Swanstrom and Tyler Houghton. Viterbo rallied and won in overtime in the 93rd minute.

* The UWS women lost to Hamline 4-0 in Superior. UWS senior goalkeeper Emily Cochran had nine saves.
