Singing valentines available Feb. 13-14
On Friday and Saturday, Feb 13-14, several barbershop quartets will fan out across the Twin Ports area to deliver singing valentines to dozens of special sweethearts. The sound of harmony will ring out in offices, restaurants, schools and homes throughout the Northland.
The quartets belong to the Duluth / Superior Harbormasters. A singing valentine costs $45 and includes two songs sung in barbershop harmony, a card, a rose and a Polaroid photo to preserve a memory of the event.

Beautiful Baby Contest at Mariner Mall Friday
Does your baby have a face that simply delights everyone? Then don't miss the New Star Discovery, Inc., regional Most Beautiful Baby Contest at the Mariner Mall in Superior, Wisconsin on Friday, Feb. 13. Boys and girls will compete in the following age divisions; 0-7 months, 8-14 months, 15-23 months, 24-35 months, 3-4 years and 5-6 years. Boys do not compete against girls in the age divisions.
Registration begins at 5 p.m., with judging beginning at 6:15 p.m. The entry fee for the main age division competition is $40. There are eight optional categories to enter which are all $5 each, you must enter the main age division competition in order to compete in any optional categories. There is no preregistration. Cash, money orders, business checks, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted.
Liquid Science Speaker Series starts Tuesday
On Tuesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Mid-Continent Ecology Division and the University of Minnesota Sea Grant Program are launching the monthly Liquid Science Speaker Series with, "Resurgence of Lake Sturgeon." This hour-long presentation by Dr. Nancy Auer, with the Department of Biological Sciences at Michigan Technological University, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Hartley Nature Center in Duluth.
The Liquid Science Speaker Series presentations are free and for the public. All presentations are scheduled from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with receptions immediately following to encourage conversations with the researchers.
14 couples to marry here on Friday the 13th
For the past couple of weeks Midwest Communications' radio stations have been soliciting fearless listeners to tempt their own fate. In return for an all-expenses-paid wedding ceremony the morning of Friday, Feb. 13, they agreed to get married on a day some people think is unlucky. Fourteen Northland couples have accepted this fateful challenge and will be married by Chapel on the Lake at a mass ceremony to be held at the Best Western Edgewater.
Local businesses have helped pull together all the extras. The event will be hosted by Chris Allen and KJ from the Big Kat Morning Show and will be broadcast live on Big Kat 98.9.
Tax-forfeit parcel review meeting Wednesday
The public is invited to review and comment on potential uses for A meeting will be held on Wednesday in the Duluth City Council Chambers between 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to review tax-forfeit parcels. These specific parcels are located in Neighborhood Districts 7, 8 and 9 (North Shore, Lakeside/Lester Park, Congdon Park, Morely Heights, and Endion neighborhoods). The public is invited to review the maps with city staff who will be present to answer questions. These maps with an explanation of the review can be viewed on the city's Web site at www.ci.duluth.mn.us/city/planning under the Tax Forfeited Land Inventory Review Project heading.

Public meetings to discuss Miller Trunk
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has scheduled public information meetings on Thursday, Feb. 12 and Tuesday, Feb. 24, regarding the proposed intersection revisions along Highway 53 (Miller Trunk Highway corridor) in Duluth and Hermantown.
Thursday's meeting will be held at Mn/DOT Headquarters, 1123 Mesaba Ave., and the Feb. 24 meeting will be at the Hermantown Public Safety Building, 5111 Maple Grove Road.
Both meetings will have an informal open house from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m.
These meetings will offer the opportunity to view options for intersection improvements along Highway 53/194 from the Cub Foods/Home Depot entrance to Highway 194/Lindahl Road intersection and provide input on various alternatives.
