1 dead after car runs stop sign in Pine County

One person was killed in Pine County on Friday when the vehicle he or she was in ran a stop sign and collided with another vehicle.

According to the Pine County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened shortly before 8:30 p.m., when a sedan traveling at high speeds on Groningen Road failed to stop at a stop sign at Highway 61. The sedan hit a full-size van on Highway 61 broadside on the passenger side.

The 73-year-old passenger in the sedan was killed on impact. There was no indication of seatbelt usage or passenger side-airbag deployment. The Ramsey County medical examiner is conducting the autopsy. The sheriff's office is withholding the victim's name pending notification of family.

The sedan's driver, a 37-year-old man, was critically injured. He was at Essentia hospital in Sandstone, then airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. There was no indication of seatbelt usage, but the driver airbag did deploy.

The driver of the van was not injured. His passenger, his 65-year-old wife, was airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. She is in stable condition, according to the sheriff's office.

The accident still is under investigation by the sheriff's office and the Minnesota State Patrol.
