It's that time of year when many people commit to a healthier lifestyle, and the Duluth News Tribune is once again giving people the chance to make it more fun with Duluze, a 13-week community challenge.

The challenge starts with the official weigh-in event on Jan. 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Clyde Iron Works, 2920 W. Michigan St., Duluth. Teams of either two or four will be weighed in and get the chance to chat with local health experts about strategy. The first 200 people who register before Jan. 16 will receive gift bags.

Grand prizes totaling $5,850 will be awarded, along with other prizes throughout the contest, including:

  • top female contestant (who is not part of the grand-prize winning team).
  • top male contestant (who is not part of the grand-prize winning team).
  • most creative team attire.
  • team spirit.
  • random prize drawings throughout the contest for all teams still competing.

A portion of the challenge’s registration fees will be donated to CHUM food shelf. In 2019, Duluze entrants made possible a $3,500 donation to CHUM.

What happens during the challenge?

Teams will work together to support and encourage their teammates to do their best to fulfill their health goals. Throughout the 13-week challenge, teams will weigh themselves on their home scales, and team captains will log in to the online weight tracker and enter their team's weights each week before midnight Friday.

Any team that does not have their weight entered on a given week will be eliminated from prize contention. The Duluze challenge administration team will keep track of all team weights as they are entered and track each team's progress, but the leader board will not be shared with competing teams.
