A Northland master gardener’s rose has climbed its way to the top of the 2020 Biltmore International Rose Trials.
Julie Overom’s miniature climbing rose, Cherry Frost, was awarded the Most Outstanding Rose, Best Climbing Rose and best General Impression Rose.
Overom has dedicated more than 20 years to developing a quality rose that is disease- and Minnesota-winter resistant, beautiful and hardy.
Early on, Cherry Frost looked like a winner.

"This one stood out from the beginning, with its abundance of blooms. Even as a second-year seeding, I was struck by its color and health. I knew it would be hardy,” Overom said in a 2018 News Tribune report.
Cherry Frost was among several roses planted in 2018 in the Biltmore Rose Garden, home to 200 varieties from worldwide growers and breeders. Roses are judged on disease resistance; ability to repeat bloom; health and rigor; and fragrance.
Judges check plantings four times a year during a two-year trial.
