What will make 2021 a great year for you? I have approached the end of a year and the beginning of a new year in many ways over the years. I have made resolutions, set goals, and evaluated progress. I have left things behind as a new year starts and brought things with me into the new year. I have “started” one thing, “stopped” one thing, and “continued” one thing into the new year.

For several years, my wife and I have picked our “one word” for the new year. What is the “one word” that best represents what God wants to do in your life? What kind of person do you want to be at the end of 2021? What is the “one word” that represents the next step of growth, impact or effectiveness you desire? A friend of mine’s word last year was “listen,” another’s was “focus.” This led him to sell two businesses and focus on just one. Another picked the word “present.” He wanted to be fully present when he was with people. He wanted to be fully present with God as he read the Bible and prayed.

My word this year is “write.” I am seeking God to write His Word on my heart in a new and fresh way. I want to fully engage with my family and continue writing the story God desires of us. Writing has become a healthy practice for me, so I have started a writing project that will be a focus for me. There are fears and doubts I will have to push through, but I am ready, excited and engaged.

I recently took out an index card and wrote, “2021 will be a GREAT year because…” and I wrote down four items. They could be seen as goals, but I do not consider them goals. I see them as major chapters God wants to write in my life and our families life this year. Lots of other circumstances, good and bad, will take place this year but if these four chapters unfold, as God wills and leads, 2021 will be a great year.

For many years I made things more complicated than necessary. Perhaps it is because of age but I am now a huge fan of simple. I am going to keep things simple. So, my list of four things that will make 2021 a great year is simple. The items are not simple, but the list is. The entire list required 10 words.

Enough about me, how are you? How are you planning on growing forward in 2021? Where are you headed? How would you like your life to be different one year from now?

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Bible. Chapter 2 says, “Turn your ear to wisdom and apply your heart to understanding — if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

Let’s be tenacious at seeking God’s leadership and wisdom in 2021!
