Duluth priest to lead South Dakota diocese

The Rev. Peter Muhich serves three Catholic churches in Duluth.

The Rev. Peter Muhich of Duluth is now bishop-elect for the Diocese of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Muhich currently serves as pastor at St. Mary Star of the Sea, Our Lady of Mercy and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary in Duluth. His installation and ordination date have yet to be confirmed.

The Eveleth native graduated from St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in 1989. He was ordained by the Diocese of Duluth in September 1989, and has served in Proctor, Hibbing, Brainerd, Grand Rapids, Bigfork, Effie, Aurora, Hoyt Lakes and Saginaw.

โ€œI have no doubt he will be a shepherd for them after the example of the Good Shepherd," Diocese of Duluth Administrator James Bissonette said in a statement. "My prayers and the prayers of all the faithful of the Duluth Diocese go with him as he takes up this new responsibility.โ€

Past Diocese of Duluth priests appointed to bishop include Bishop Timothy Corbett and Bishop Laurence A. Glenn, the first and fourth bishops of the Diocese of Crookston in Minnesota.
