Jim Heffernan’s column in the March 22 News Tribune (“Not the first time Duluth has shut down”) was the most comforting and inspiring article I read in the last week. Brilliant.
To know those before us had this experience while in uncertain times was truly what we Minnesotans needed to hear right now. It will be uncomfortable, but we will bear and get through it.
Heffernan’s recalling of his mother's account of coming to town with her mask on during the 1918 flu ban taught us that wisdom also comes from standing on the shoulders of others — in this case, other generations. Let's hope we apply the lesson in our time.
Many people in our community continue to shine through this and I wish to thank them for it. That includes Heffernan.
