A 35-year-old Ontario man died Saturday after being thrown from his snowmobile near Buyck, east of Orr.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Melvyn Russell MacDonald of Fort Frances, Ontario, crashed along the Cook Area Snowmobile Trail shortly before 6 p.m., after rounding a curve with a group of snowmobilers. MacDonald’s snowmobile left the trail and struck a tree, throwing him from the machine. The crash scene is about 3 miles east of St. Louis County Road 422.

Despite lifesaving efforts from first responders and other snowmobilers, MacDonald died at the scene, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The crash remains under investigation, but the Sheriff’s Office said speed and alcohol were believed to be factors. The Sheriff’s Office received assistance at the scene from the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, Minnesota State Patrol, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Forest Service, Cook Ambulance and Fire, Virginia Ambulance and North Memorial Air Medical.
