A ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Friday to rename Duluth’s Lake Place Park as Gichi-ode’ Akiing, which means “A Grand Heart Place” in the Ojibwe language.

“This is a memorable moment for the Anishinaabe and all Native people living in this area,” Babette Sandman, chair of the Duluth Indigenous Commission, said in a news release. “We are strengthening our presence in our community, we are visible and our language enhances our sense of belonging.”

The Duluth City Council unanimously voted to change the name in December.

Kevin Dupuis, chairman of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and Duluth Mayor Emily Larson will speak at the event at the downtown Lakewalk entrance at Second Avenue East and East Superior Street.

As that stretch of Superior Street is currently under construction, parking will be available from First Street at the Medical District, Tech Village and Hart District ramps.
