The News Tribune and local TV news stations partnered on a project that received a 2021 Board of Governors Upper Midwest Emmy Award in mid-September.
"COVID-19 Vaccines: Finding Answers" was a collaboration between the newspaper, WDSE-WRPT, CBS3, WDIO-TV and KQDS Fox 21 that featured an hourlong special hosted by Dennis Anderson that aired on Feb. 24, 2021. The special contained in-studio interviews with local and regional doctors, a pharmacist, the Minnesota Department of Health, St. Louis County Department of Health, and Healthy Alliances Matter.
Local newsrooms zeroed in on other specific topics: a look at vaccinations in northern Wisconsin by Baihly Warfield of WDIO-TV; Jessie Slater of KBJR-TV reported on how vaccines were developed and what to expect after a shot; Arman Rahman of Fox 21 considered COVID-19 and local people of color; and CBS3 anchor Kristen Vake interviewed specialists on life after the pandemic.
Samantha Erkkila and Andee Erickson of the News Tribune reported on the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program and local businesses that participated. Fox 21's Dan Hanger looked into how the vaccines were transported and kept safe.
The program, produced by all of the media outlets, aired on PBS-TV and was streamed on each newsroom's social media.
This is believed to be the News Tribune's first Emmy Award.
