Gaelynn Lea is hosting a showcase of musicians, including her full band, Wheelchair Sports Camp, Billy McLaughlin and DJ FunSize on Oct. 5 at the Ordway in St. Paul.
The show, presented by The Current, is billed as a “radical group of talented artists. From hip-hop to acoustic guitar and everything in between.”
Gaelynn Lea is a violinist who mostly performed locally before winning NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2016. Now she tours the world playing her signature blend of upbeat traditional fiddle tunes and her deep-dark originals. She also is an advocate for accessibility in the arts.
Wheelchair Sports Camp is described as “combining humor, radical political perspectives, compassion and undeniable music chops.” It’s fronted by rapper, beat-maker Kalyn. Billy McLaughlin is a performer and composer, and DJ FunSize is a vinyl purist who favors disco, house and funk.
