For most of us, summers in the Northland are a time to embrace the outdoors. And the perfect end to a day outside is curled up on the air-conditioned couch with aloe, calamine lotion and a good movie.

Here are a few seasonal picks to stream, ideal for rain or shine, or if UV-free is your jam.

“Dirty Dancing” (1987)

Class divides be damned in this flick most of us grew up with (and probably didn’t fully understand). At a swanky resort with her family, Baby (Jennifer Grey) learns looks are deceiving when she falls for dance instructor Johnny (Patrick Swayze). This summer staple spawned a sequel, an ABC remake and countless daydreams about “the lift.” PG-13, 1:40

Available: Amazon Prime, Google Play, VUDU

"Independence Day" (1996)
Will Smith in "Independence Day." imdb.com

Hostile aliens fly in, attacking major cities around the world. Big battles ensue, with high-tech-for-the-time special effects. Expect validation for crazy-on-the-news guy, a dog outrunning an explosion, and a presidential speech my boyfriend in the mid-’90s called the “best of all time.” “Welcome to Earf.” Also starring: Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum. PG-13, 2:25

Available: Amazon Prime, Google Play, Hulu, VUDU

“Jaws” (1975)
Roy Scheider in "Jaws." imdb.com

Director Steven Spielberg’s thriller about a pissed-off fish is as immortal as the first two notes of its theme song. Brody (Roy Scheider) and Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) enlist the help of a shark hunter when a great white’s body count rises on Amity Island. This one’s powerful enough to make kids and grown-ass adults, at some point, fear all bodies of water, including the bathtub. PG, 2:04

Available: Amazon Prime, Google Play, VUDU

“The Lost Boys” (1982)

Nothing says summer like a shiny, shirtless saxophonist playing near a garbage fire.

Trying to impress a girl, Michael (Jason Patric) plays chicken with her biker friends and follows them into their dimly lit cave. There, David (Kiefer Sutherland) peer-pressures Michael into ingesting an unidentified substance. Things slowly get weird. Expect taxidermy play, lots of The Doors and, if watched during puberty, confused feelings about oversized canines. Also starring Jami Gertz, the Coreys (Haim and Feldman) and Dianne Wiest. R, 1:37

Available: Amazon Prime, Google Play, VUDU

Vada Sultenfuss (Anna Chlumsky) spends the summer exploring fatal illnesses, crushing on her fifth-grade teacher and riding bikes with her bestie Thomas J. (Macauley Culkin). She’s in for big changes when Shelley (Jamie Lee Curtis) comes to work in her funeral-home home. This is the perfect mix of comedy, macabre and heart — and a sincere PSA to always carry an epi pen, folks. PG, 1:42

Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) is set on a bonding road trip to Walley World with the fam. After a strain of mishaps, it all goes south, and as they near their destination, Clark’s nears the edges of sanity. There will be a hostage sitch, repeated Christie Brinkley sightings, and a shout-out to “Psycho” with a banana. This comedy led to six more movies, including a 2015 spin-off with Rusty carrying the torch. R, 1:38

Scott Smalls (Tom Guiry) makes friends on the baseball field, thanks to star player Benny (Mike Vitar). Big nostalgia as he navigates campouts, smores stuff and the neighborhood pool. Expect a big doggie, fair-ride projectile vomit, and “For.Ev.Ever” references. Forever. PG, 1:41

Larry and Richard find their dead boss, Bernie at his beach house along with proof the hit was meant for them. To buy some time, they spend the weekend maneuvering Bernie around town while they try to solve the crime. Starring Andrew McCarthy, Jonathan Silverman and Terry Kisar. This kinda-body-horror black comedy spawned a sequel with the same corpse. Ew. PG-13, 1:37
