Calling all Duluth-area residents who light up our dark winter nights! The deadline to enter the 24th annual Holiday Lighting Celebration is noon Monday. Sponsored by the Duluth Budgeteer News and Hanft Fride Law Office, this contest honors our neighbors who brighten the holiday season, while also helping the less fortunate: Hanft Fride will make a $5 donation to the Salvation Army for every entry.
Categories include Master (residential), Residential/Newcomer and Best Street. This year's judges include veteran judges Mike Seyfer (of HT Klatzky & Associates), Lee Ziegler (of Ziegler Creative Services) and Bill Nelson (of Nelson & Company), plus eight-time Master category winner Marcia Hales, a former Budgeteer advisory board member who is also hosting the awards ceremony at her home on Park Point. Hales is not entering this year's contest.
Following the award ceremony, An Escape Limousine will treat the contest winners to a two-hour lighting tour of the best in each category. Glenwood Signs and Awards Inc. is providing laser-engraved alder plaques.
The awards ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10 at Marcia Hales' Park Point home, where she and her grandson Zach Hales continue to put on her "Holiday Spirit in the Lights" display.
"I call it 'Duluth's original walk-through light display,' said Hales, who's been producing the wonderland of lights for 10 years now. Hales is flipping the switch on "Holiday Spirit in the Lights" at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4.
