Gary-New Duluth Development Alliance board members are working hard to raise money to complete the first phase of their $2.3 million community revitalization project. So far, they've renovated the community center called "The Shack" and are now focusing on installing storm-water drainage and building a pavilion picnic shelter, two soccer fields with bleachers and an outdoor ice rink for the winter.
In July, a handful of board members sold raffle tickets in front of Super One Foods grocery store in Spirit Valley. So far, they've collected $306,000, but need about $500,000 to finish phase one. After phase one is completed, the alliance plans to build a dog park, skateboard park and community garden.
Raffle prizes include a Polaris Sportsman ATV from Sonju Two Harbors and Kia of Duluth; $2,500 to Miller Creek Lawn and Landscape and Garden Center; $1,000 for flooring services from Johnson Carpet One; a tour for two with Lake Superior Helicopters; $500 and $250 to Super One Foods; an adult bicycle from Continental Ski and Bike; and a refrigerator from Johnson Mertz Quality Appliance Center. The raffle drawing will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday during the Gary New Duluth Community Club picnic at the GND Recreation Area on 101 Avenue West. Visit gnd.community for information.
