A Duluth poet who built up the local literary scene in the 1980s-90s will be celebrated during an informal memorial at 2 p.m. Sunday near the stage at Leif Erikson Park in Duluth.

There will be a poetry reading at the event, according to his ex-wife-turned-friend, Katri Sipila.

Patrick McKinnon, co-creator of Poetry Harbor, died Oct. 9 more than a decade after the removal of a benign brain tumor changed his quality of life. He was 64. In his prime, the beat poet was known to be a boisterous man with "endless energy" who ruled the microphone at open-mic events.

"If honoring him isn’t your thing," friend and collaborator Jordan Eileen Bissell said in a Facebook post, "I think he’d also appreciate heckling."
