Cindy Scott McDonnell enjoyed a kayaking journey through the water lilies on a recent sunny day near Stockton Island in the Apostles. She captured these images Sept. 6 on her iPhone, she said, emphasizing there were no "enhancements" to them. Her dog Roxy was along for the ride.

She titled the experience in Julian Bay as going "Into the Monet," a reference to the famed series of impressionist paintings by French painter Claude Monet. McDonnell, who lives in Wayzata, Minnesota, but is originally from Superior, said she returned five days later and found the lilies already "on their way out." "It's quite sublime to be 'in the lilies' vs. just looking at them," she said via email. "To truly experience their beauty, one must be up close — or have a big zoom lens!"
