• Duluth Art Institute is offering Empty Bowl sessions from 6-8 p.m. every Tuesday starting Feb. 18 in DAI's Lincoln Park Studio, 2229 W. Second St., Duluth. Participants will make ceramic bowls to be sold during Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank's Empty Bowl fundraiser in April. Registration: $35 and includes instruction, materials and a ticket to the Empty Bowl event. Capacity is limited to 10 people per week. Experience is not required. • Friends of the Superior Public Library is holding its annual Love Your Local Artist event from 5:30-8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, in Superior Public Library, 1530 Tower Ave., Superior. Artwork by local artists will be on display and for sale. There will also be live music by Superior High School orchestra members, refreshments, a silent auction featuring artwork donated by participating artists and the Adopt-a-Book program, which allows individuals and groups to give back to the library by purchasing literature for the library. • Duluth Cross-Country Ski Club's second annual Snow Ball Gala is from 5-9:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in Greysolon Ballroom, 231 E. Superior St., Duluth. The party will include silent and live auctions, refreshments, community Nordic ski awards, speakers former mayor Don Ness and trails guru Hansi Johnson, and an after-party in Black Water. Tickets: $80 in advance at duluthxc.com through Wednesday. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door for $100. Proceeds will be dedicated to Grand Avenue Nordic Center, a cross-country ski center in the works that will include a new chalet and trails at the bottom of Spirit Mountain in West Duluth.
• Duluth KidsClub's Valentine's Extravaganza is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, in Clyde Iron Works, 2920 W. Michigan St., Duluth. The event includes singing, dancing, sliding, bouncing, games with prizes, treats, a photo booth and real-life costumed characters. A Build-A-Buddy station will be available for an additional $14. A portion of ticket sales and all proceeds from Build-A-Buddy benefit Northern Lights Foundation to support local families who have children with life-threatening illnesses.
• Douglas County Historical Society will present theatrical performance "Preserve the Union" at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, and its matinee "Intimate Betrayal" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at 1101 John Ave. in Superior. Both shows delve into Mary Todd Lincoln's life in the White House and her years after Abe Lincoln was assassinated. • The annual Garbage Omelet Breakfast is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in Holy Assumption Church Hall, 5601 Tower Avenue, Superior. Breakfast includes the traditional three-egg garbage omelet, toast, hashbrowns and beverages prepared by the Knights of Columbus Council 7106. Tickets: $8 for adults or $5 for children 12 and under. • Lake Superior Zoo seeks adult volunteers to act as train drivers, help with education and horticulture efforts, or run the barnyard. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year and especially during the zoo's peak season, May through September. Volunteers should be passionate about animals, enjoy talking with people and be at least 18-years-old. A volunteer information session will be held from 5-6 p.m. Thursday at the zoo, 7210 Fremont St. in Duluth. Volunteer applications for the 2017 season are due March 1. • Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospice seeks volunteers to help provide humane and compassionate care to patients. The hospice especially seeks volunteers to help along the North Shore and in Silver Bay, those with musical skills and those interested in working with military veterans. Essentia will provide training in hospice philosophy, spiritual care, grief and bereavement, infection control and symptom management. Training is from 4:30-8:30 p.m. March 20, 27 and 29 in St. Mary's Medical Center, 407 E. Third St., Duluth.
