Julebyen returns to Knife River
Most activities will be held outside and masks required inside the recreation building.
After a year off due to COVID-19, Julebyen 2021 will be held the weekend of Dec. 4-5 in Knife River.
Julebyen is a Scandinavian-themed Christmas festival held annually at the start of December The festival celebrates Scandinavian food, artisan crafts, storytelling, music and other outdoor activities.
The event includes multiple indoor and outdoor marketplaces around the grounds of the Knife River Recreation Center and Knife River Campground, including the Gnome Dome, outdoor and indoor markets, Troll Village and the Knife River Lutheran Church.
This year's festival will look familiar to most past attendees, though it will be streamlined with additional safety precautions in place in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines. Most activities will be held outside and masks required inside the recreation building.
Events will kick off on Saturday at 9 a.m. and run through 4 p.m. then continue Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
There will also be two train activities near the Knife River Depot. Attendees can ride the North Shore Scenic Railroad's Julebyen Express from the Duluth Depot to the festival.
There will also be a short Troll Train ride through "Troll Canyon" where visitors can see trolls of all shapes and sizes.

When: Saturday, Dec. 4; starting at 11 a.m., train departs every hour.
Tickets: $10 adults, $4 ages 4-12, free for ages 3 and under; purchase at train depot. Tickets for the troll train are included with every Julebyen Express ticket purchase.

When: Saturday, Dec. 4 — departs Duluth at 9:30 a.m., boarding begins in Knife River at 2 p.m. for 3 p.m. return; Sunday, Dec. 5 — departs Duluth at 9:30 a.m., boarding begins in Knife River at 1 p.m. for 2 p.m. return.
Tickets: $20 adults, $10 for children; free Troll Canyon ride included with each adult ticket.
