  • Rosemary Washkuhn of Foxboro, Wisconsin, won the Duluth News Tribune's "Some Big Vegetable" contest this week with a 21.05 pound zucchini. The 1981 Guinness Book of World Records reports the heaviest zucchini ever grown weighed 19 pounds 14 ounces.
  • Minnesota's bear season is just a week old, but so far the number of violations is up significantly from last fall. State Department of Natural Resources officers made 40 arrests last weekend, most for hunting within a dump or shining at night.

  • Although recent rains have interfered with annual painting and repair work, the Aerial Bridge should be ready for regular traffic on Oct. 1. While the bridge is closed for repairs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the tug Ellen D. takes care of transporting Park Point traffic.
  • Lake County's 15th annual fair will formally open tomorrow in Two Harbors and run for three days. Besides larger agricultural and livestock exhibits, an effort has been made to arrange improved entertainment, including baseball, horseshoe and kite-flying tournaments, and dancing.
