  • Nurses carrying picket signs paraded in front of the Central Mesabi Medical Center in Hibbing yesterday, the first full day of a strike which has closed Hibbing's only hospital. About 140 registered nurses walked off the job Friday morning after contract negotiations broke down.
  • Voters in Duluth's 2nd District this week will select two of four City Council candidates vying for a place on November's general election ballot. Cynthia Albright, Eugene Lyttle, Howard Meyer and Linda Stewart are running to replace Councilor Peter Sneve, who is not seeking reelection.

  • A petition bearing 1,000 signatures and seeking an expansion of the Observation skating rink and a new warming house was read at the Duluth City Council meeting yesterday. The proposal is to extend the rink to 10th Avenue West and widen it by 50 feet.
  • Showings of films starring Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle have been canceled at Duluth theaters owned by the Clinton-Meyers Company. The comedian yesterday was formally charged with murder in San Francisco police court in connection with the death of Virginia Rappe, motion picture actress.
