  • The Minnesota Waste Management Board will hold a public meeting in Duluth tonight to hear residents' opinions on locating a hazardous waste processing plant here. Two potential sites are in industrial areas on the waterfront and a third is east of the airport.
  • Despite a sluggish market and high interest rates, three developers are planning to build 608 luxury homes, townhouses, and condominiums in Duluth. East West Realty plans the most-expensive homes — 191 townhouses and condominiums on the bluffs overlooking Northland Country Club.

  • The seven-story addition to Duluth's St. Mary's Hospital now under construction will be completed early next spring, according to McLeod & Smith, contractors. The $350,000 addition, facing Third Street, will be the first of three units to be added to the hospital.
  • Former Duluthian Gar Wood returned to town yesterday, piloting his speedboat the "Gar Wood Jr. II" through the ship canal and docking by the Duluth Boat Club. Mr. Wood has built the world's fastest speed hydroplanes and gasoline cruisers and raced them around the world.
