Go mad at the zoo

The Lake Superior Zoological Society announces it's 5th Annual M.A.D. Safari (Member Appreciation Day) on Tuesday, August 5th from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Lake Superior Zoo.

The Lake Superior Zoological Society announces it's 5th Annual M.A.D. Safari (Member Appreciation Day) on Tuesday, August 5th from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Lake Superior Zoo.

The M.A.D. Safari is a Member's-Only event, showcasing the best of the zoo's best ... rolled into one fantastic event! Members will have the chance to meet the new animal care team as they conduct enrichment and interpretive programs, enjoy great food and music, and see the zoo animals in action. The enrichment schedule includes live fish for the polar bear, snapping turtle, brown bears, river otters and Amur tigers (see below for a full schedule).

This party is hosted by the Lake Superior Zoological Society as a very special thank you it's zoo members for supporting the zoo's education and conservation mission all year long. Advance reservations are required. Please call the zoo at 218-730-4500 or email: admin@lszoo.org by Monday August 3rd, to make your reservation. Admission to the M.A.D. Safari is FREE; meal tickets, however, can be purchased in increments of $2.50 each and will be for sale during the event at several locations around the zoo. M.A.D. Safari food vendors include the Green Mill Pizza Wagon, B & B Market of Cloquet and Canal Park Dairy Queen. Music will be provided by Park Avenue, a six piece variety band, from 5 - 7 pm. However, the real entertainment is the animal enrichment schedule.

4:15 p.m. - Live fish for the snapping turtle Nestor

4:30 p.m. - A skunk enrichment for African lions Leo, Lilly, & Malkia, with Lead Zookeeper Daniel Benboe

5 - 6 p.m. - Tours of the Animal Care Center, with Vet-Tech (and animal rehabber) Gerry Krippner and Docent Pam Dull

5 p.m. - Live fish for polar bear Berlin, with Zookeeper Lizzie Johnson

5:15 p.m. - Training session for harbor seal Vivian and Feisty, with Lead Zookeeper Daniel Benboe

5:30 p.m. - Silver fox talk, with Animal Curator Peter Pruett

5:45 p.m. - Enrichments for snow leopards Harry and Gulu, with Zookeeper Aide Maicie Sykes

6 p.m. - Live fish for the brown bears Trouble and Phoebe

6:15 p.m. - Live fish for the river otters Helen and Otto, with Vet-Tech Gerry Krippner

6:30 p.m. - Live fish for polar bear Berlin (2nd Viewing), with Zookeeper Lizzie Johnson

6:45 pm Enrichment toy for the Angolan Colobus Kelly, Kero and Kramer, with Zookeeper Dave Thompson

7 p.m. - Bat feeding and interpretative program, Zookeeper Dave Thompson

7:30 p.m. - Live fish for the Amur tigers Natasha and Ussuri
