It is easy to forget that prior to 1920, women were not allowed to vote in federal and most state and local elections. Today, the current (114th) Congress includes 104 women out of 535 members. This is the highest number of women serving in any single U.S. Congress in history.
In the Duluth area, women are and/or have served on school boards, city councils and county commissions. Recently a Duluth Woman served as Minnesota's Lieutenant Governor.
The League of Women Voters (LWV) of Duluth will celebrate woman's right to vote and hold office with an EqualiTea at the Duluth Woman's Club on Saturday, March 14. Several LWV members who hold elected office will tell their stories of what they enjoy, challenges they have faced and the influence the LWV has had on their path. City Councilor Emily Larson and School Board Member Rosie Loeffler-Kemp will be featured 10-11:30 a.m. Rep. Jen Schultz and City Councilor Sharla Gardner will be featured 1-2:30 p.m.
