Dozens of decorated cakes have been donated to Ely-area organizations and businesses in appreciation of essential employees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ely resident Susan Laine started a community contest in which residents could vote on Facebook to decide whom would receive cakes. The town expanded on the idea, however, and the LovEly Cakes campaign received donations to expand the effort to more than 50 cakes.

Laine's interest in cake-decorating dates back 25 years to a Wilton class at the Minnetonka, Minnesota, JoAnn Fabrics. Nowadays, she and her husband, Curt, work together on their cake designs, which are drawn freehand.

When votes were first tallied, Ely Bloomenson Community Hospital and Pharmacy was the winner. The effort soon grew, however. For example, a couple from Florida donated a cake to the Boathouse Restaurant because they got engaged at this business, and two sisters donated their allowance toward a cake for the G-Men waste removal business.
