Bygones: T.W. Hugo gets ready to take over as Duluth mayor

  • Mayor-elect T.W. Hugo, who will succeed C.R. Magney tomorrow as mayor of Duluth, was present at the meeting of the City Council yesterday. Mr. Hugo was reviewing methods of procedure so as to be ready to assume his duties at the next council meeting.
  • A $40 million damage suit brought by Capt. Alexander McDougall of Duluth against the Oliver Mining Company opens today in Duluth federal court. Capt. McDougall alleges that from 1908 to 1918 the company without permission used an ore-washing machine that he had invented.
  • A record enrollment of 242 students was reached yesterday at the opening of the Superior State Normal School, according to President V.E. McCaskill. School officials expect they will have difficulty finding suitable rooming houses for the large number of out-of-town students.
  • Mayor C.R. Magney will be the guest of honor tomorrow night at a farewell banquet at the Duluth Commercial Club. The mayor has resigned to devote all his time between now and Nov. 2 to manage his campaign for Duluth District Court judge.
