Bygones: 100 years ago, women moved from St. Louis County Jail due to poor conditions

  • Swan Luikkonen, a suspect in the June 5 murder of Duluth taxicab driver Johnny Jones, has been brought back from Canada and is in the St. Louis County Jail. Luikkonen was located in Nairn Centre, Ontario, based on information provided by his former girlfriend.
  • The Duluth Women's Council is proposing that all female prisoners be moved from the St. Louis County Jail to the Duluth Industrial Home for Girls. There have been reports of poor health conditions at the jail and of men taking advantage of women prisoners.
  • An increase of from 10 to 50% in the assessed valuation of real estate in eight northern Minnesota communities was announced yesterday by the Minnesota State Tax Commission. Cities named are Virginia, Hibbing, Chisholm, Eveleth, Ely, Proctor, Biwabik, and Aurora.
  • With the completion of the new Tower Avenue white way in two weeks, Superior will have one of the most modern street lighting systems of any city in the country. The lighting will extend along Tower Avenue from Winter Street to 16th Street.
