Bayfront open for skating, and slipping

There's a lot more sliding (and falling) going on than ice skating so far at the Bayfront Park outdoor ice rink. The rink opened Wednesday evening to few skaters, but on Thursday things picked up, thanks to a crowded Bentleyville.

For those who want to skate on Duluth's only city-supported outdoor ice rink, the Bayfront Family Center will be open and staffed from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday-Friday, from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Special skating hours during the school holiday break will be 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28 through Thursday, Dec. 31. The rink will be closed Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1.

Many of the city's other outdoor skating rinks are now being maintained by area community clubs, hockey groups and neighborhood organizations. There are two rinks at Irving Recreation Center that are ready for business.

(For a list of other area rinks that have been flooding in the past, look under Budge Community on this page. To share hours and other details about those rinks, e-mail jpeterson@duluthbudgeteer.com .)

There are also several indoor skating opportunities for recreational skaters in Duluth: Folks can skate free at the Heritage Center in West Duluth from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday during school break. The city will hold a free family skating party from 3 to 5 p.m. Dec. 26 at the DECC.
