The Pierce family believed they were set for a night of making homemade pizzas with a friend when a knock came to their side door. The Two Harbors family was selected for Best Christmas Ever.

"Best Christmas Ever is a locally supported nonprofit that takes families who have had a really hard year through no fault of their own and we just try to lift them up the best we can, support them for the next year," local BCE captain Katie Robinson said.

BCE started in 2011 to help give a couple of Minnesota families in need a Christmas celebration they otherwise couldn't afford. The goal is to raise money in gifts and support for each family with the hope of making a lasting impact on their lives. Donations and sponsorships for Best Christmas Ever come from local businesses.

The Pierce family was nominated by Two Harbors High School secretary Ronnie Johnson.

"Dee Furo told me about this organization and said that they were hoping to get a family in the area, she thought I might know of someone who could use some help," Johnson said. "I didn't even have to think about it. With David's health and all the traveling they have had to do this year."

The Pierce family has had a difficult year, with second-oldest son David's cancer diagnosis, they've had to travel between the Mayo Clinic and Children's Hospital.

Robinson said the family was also selected for their support of the community.

To make their Christmas a little more merry, special gifts were purchased for each family member, such as a small drone for Cory, a Minnesota Wild sweatshirt for David, makeup brushes for cheerleader Mikayla and dolls for the youngest, Bailey. The Two Harbors Cheer team was there to support Mikayla and bring in gifts.

Although both parents said they didn't want anything for Christmas, other than for their family to be well, both received small gifts, as well as close to $1,500 to go toward bills of their choice.

"It's overwhelming," Danielle Pierce said. "But wonderful."
