BCA: Duluth suspect died of self-inflicted shot


Kiwanis Vantine Life Fellowship Awards were presented to Joe Hesch and Bernadine Martin.


• Seventh annual Project Joy event raised a record $33,889 for the Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank's Backpack Program. Laura Plys begin Project Joy seven years ago to honor her late husband and community leader Patrick Plys. Proceeds will provide 9,234 weekend bags of food for northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin children who participate in the program.


• Cordy Swanson of Duluth was installed as president of the Port of Duluth Kiwanis Club. Also installed was president-elect Sharon Turnboom, treasurer Joe Hesch and secretary Dick Hane. Steve Lyons, Jeremy O'Conner, Kevin O'Brien, Bob Ward, Anna Tanski and Judy Berntson will serve as the board of the directors.


• The University of Wisconsin-Superior has been named a Military Friendly School for the ninth year. This is in recognition of the university's efforts to assist military personnel, veterans and their family members in completing a college education.
