The Two Harbors Area Food Shelf received the keys to its new space downtown at 517 First Ave. on Wednesday, May 1. Building owner Dale Moe passed over the front door key to Executive Director Michelle Miller to the 2,200 foot vacant space. The space was formerly used for winter storage for boats, four-wheelers, kayaks and other recreational equipment. The organization has a rent-to-own lease and is set to begin construction shortly, depending on funding.
"It's happening! I have a key!" Miller said. "Several years of planning and work have led to this moment."
The nonprofit is slated to move from its longtime home in the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency office building at 2124 10th St. by the end of the summer. The transition and renovation of the space will be completed in a series of phases, but Miller stated she hopes the organization will be moved in and functional by the end of the summer.
Miller stressed that regular distribution will continue throughout the process.
