NEWS TRIBUNE

While many mining operations have been shedding jobs in recent weeks, the U.S. Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration is hiring, and it's coming to Duluth in search of candidates to serve as federal mine inspectors. The jobs pay between $37,000 and $70,000 per year.

On Wednesday and Thursday, March 4 and 5, the government will begin screening applicants at the Radisson Hotel, 505 W. Superior St. Candidates can begin registering at 7 a.m., and testing will follow at 8 a.m.

"MSHA continues to seek out mining professionals who are eager to help keep U.S. mines safe by preventing accidental injuries and fatalities," said Michael Davis, the agency's deputy assistant secretary of labor for operations, in a release issued Friday. "We're intent on hiring the most highly qualified people interested in a career in mine safety."

Applicants should bring a photo ID, a resume describing applicable work experience and documentation to support any veteran's preference claim. Candidates must have at least one year experience performing onsite safety and health inspections, analysis, monitoring or evaluation work in mining, occupational health or closely-related industries.
