More than a year after Kwik Trip announced its come to Two Harbors, the new convenience store and gas station is set to open this week.

Kwik Trip, located along State Highway 61 - on the former site of the Sonju automotive dealership - will open at 5 a.m. Thursday.

The demolition of the old Sonju building started in May of this year, and it took just a few weeks to clear the debris. Kwik Trip, a La Crosse, Wis.-based company, decided to expand to Two Harbors because of the many comment cards and letters the company received from residents in the area, said Scott Teigen, vice president and chief financial officer for Kwik Trip.

"We're very excited to open up this store in Two Harbors," Teigen said.

This Kwik Trip location will feature a single-stall car wash as well as a separate diesel canopy on the back side of the store. The site also offers a few spots for large trailers and trucks to park in the back. Teigen said the back right lot was left as hard concrete and can be used as overflow parking.

Two Harbors is not the only Kwik Trip to open recently in the Northland. The new Kwik Trip on Washington Avenue near State Highway 33 in Cloquet opened in mid-October - the fast-growing chain's 500th location.

Also adding to the region's growing collection of Kwik Trip stores is the recently opened Superior location at 918 Belknap St.

The chain now includes six stores in Superior; four in Duluth; two in Hermantown and Cloquet; and one apiece in Scanlon and Moose Lake, and soon the Two Harbors location.

A seventh Superior location - at 6007 Tower Avenue in the South End neighborhood - is scheduled to open Dec. 1.

Construction is underway to convert the former Junction Oasis Truck Stop on State Highway 210 at Interstate 35 near Carlton into a Kwik Trip, and a site has been cleared for a Kwik Trip at the corner of Martin and Rice Lake roads in Rice Lake, just north of Duluth.

The Ashland Daily Press has reported that Kwik Trip is planning a store in that city, along U.S. Highway 2 on the east side of town. And Kwik Trip reportedly also is considering a store on the corner of Maple Grove and Haines roads in Hermantown.
