Construction on southbound U.S. Highway 53 between Pike Lake and Twig, from just north of Midway Road to just north of St. Louis County Road 8, will begin Monday.

The project will start with temporary crossover construction that will require left- and passing-lane closures on both north and south sides of Highway 53, a Minnesota Department of Transportation news release said this week.

Minor delays are to be expected during the heaviest traffic times.

Following the construction of the temporary crossovers, traffic will be switched to head-to-head traffic on the northbound lanes for construction to begin on the southbound lanes.

The $10 million project will remove the in-place concrete overlay and construct a new concrete overlay in the southbound lanes.

Work is expected to last 95 days. The project will bring smoother pavement, and an improved ride, while extending the useful life of the highway, MnDOT said.

When asked why only the southbound lanes were being targeted, MnDOT explained that a fix was done on the northbound lanes a few years ago to make the surface last longer, and it remains in better condition.

MnDOT was able to secure funding for the southbound lanes this year, and it is anticipated the northbound lanes will be targeted for resurfacing in the future.
