The Soo Locks will close on their usual date, Jan. 15, marking the end of the shipping season for Lake Superior, the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation said Friday. The locks and canal at Sault Ste. Marie connect Superior to the other Great Lakes and typically close for about six weeks at the beginning of the year due to ice.

The Welland Canal, which opens the Great Lakes to international trade, will close Dec. 31 at the latest.

“Severe climatic conditions” could change the dates, the organization said.
