The city of Duluth is suggesting a different route for motorists needing to cross the Blatnik Bridge from downtown while the Interstate 35 construction project is under way.

In a news release, the city's communication office said drivers have been complaining about backups at the Railroad Street and Garfield Avenue intersection during afternoon rush hour since the southbound I-35 ramp to the bridge was closed.

Beginning Monday, drivers coming from downtown are encouraged to use West Superior Street, rather than Railroad Street, to reach Garfield Avenue and the bridge.

Early next week, crews will modify the signal at West Superior Street and Garfield Avenue to provide a protected left turn. That should allow traffic to move more smoothly on the preferred route, the news release said.
