Amid “rather intense financial distress,” Red Herring Lounge owner Bob Monahan said Friday he is laying off his entire staff in an effort to keep the downtown bar and music/arts venue open.

In a post on his personal Facebook page, Monahan said the decision was a “well thought-out and necessary action aimed solely at keeping the Red Herring open so that Duluth may continue to enjoy the types of events the Herring will continue to provide for the foreseeable future.”

The laid-off employees were told their jobs would end at the end of October, after which time Monahan said: “You will see a lot more of me behind the bar.”

The Red Herring opened at 208 E. First St. in 2014 and has brought a wide variety of acts to Duluth, including at the Super Big Block Party that launched in 2015.
