Shorty's is up for sale in Superior

Health concerns prompt Brian Noel to sell the downtown restaurant he launched in 2013

One of Superior’s more famous restaurants is up for sale.

The owner of Shorty's Pizza and Smoked Meat, Brian Noel, is selling the business he started in 2013 during the reconstruction of Tower Avenue.

Noel said he is making plans to move to warmer climate after a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis.

“One of the things with the arthritis is warmer climates are definitely a little more friendly to the disease,” Noel said.

But he’s willing to stick around for awhile to help the new owner or owners familiarize themselves with the business that was featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” hosted by Guy Fieri, in 2014.


Noel said the recipes that put Shorty’s in the national spotlight are part of the deal when the restaurant sells.

“We’d be more than happy to stick around for a few months,” Noel said. Even after that, he said he’d still be willing to take calls from new owners.

The restaurant and bar at 1015 Tower Avenue can seat up to 170 people, and it is packed most evenings, according to the real estate listing posted by Jim Ronding of RE/MAX Results. The property is larger than a half-acre and includes a 50-car lot north of the building. It's listed for $750,000.

When Noel opened the business, the restaurant and bar got a full makeover in addition to new state-of-the art synchronized restaurant equipment.

“It’s really very, very stable, very profitable,” Noel said. “In some ways, I really don’t want to sell it, but if it weren’t for the health thing, I would probably stick around for a few more years.”

Noel said he made the decision to sell the restaurant because it’s a much more hands-on business than the other one he owns in Superior, the Palace Bar. He’s planning to continue running that from afar for a few more years before selling it, but he said he wouldn’t feel right about running the restaurant like that because it is a more complex operation with significantly more employees.

Until the restaurant sells, Noel said it will be business as usual.

“I just brought out a new menu like four weeks ago,” Noel said. “I’m running it as if I’m going to have it for the next 10 years.”


Shorty’s Pizza and Smoked Meat has become a popular spot in Superior, in part, because of Noel’s Canadian roots. Smoked meats — the Canadian equivalent of a hamburger — and very cheesy pizzas are staples of the menu.

“It’ been a good run,” Noel said. “It’s a great business. From a business point of view, it was cash-flow positive right from the first day.”
