The Younkers store in Superior’s Mariner Mall will close as part of a “comprehensive turnaround plan” by its parent company.

Bon-Ton Stores announced Wednesday that it will close 42 stores nationwide, including Younkers, Herberger's, Elder-Beerman, Boston Store, Carson's and Bon-Ton locations. The Superior store is the only closure in the Northland.

Located in the Mariner Mall at 69 N. 28th St., the Superior Younkers employs 33 associates.

The closures are the next step in efforts by Bon-Ton Stores to move forward with a more productive store footprint, Bill Tracy, president and chief executive officer, said in a news release. He said a total of 47 storefronts would be closed in early 2018; five of those had been previously announced.

In addition to Superior, eight other Wisconsin locations are slated to close — the Boston Store in Beaver Dam, the Elder-Beerman store in Beloit, the Boston Store Clearance Center in Milwaukee and Younkers stores in Appleton, Fond du Lac, Manitowoc, Marinette and Wausau. A Herberger's Clearance Center in Maplewood is the only Minnesota store set to close, according to the news release.

Store closing sales at the affected stores are set to begin Thursday and run for approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Associates at these locations will be offered the opportunity to interview for available positions at other store locations.

Bon-Ton Stores Inc., headquartered in New York, Pennsylvania and MIlwaukee, operates 260 stores.

The company’s other stores in the Northland include the Younkers at Miller Hill Mall and a Herberger’s in Virginia.
