I stopped by Northwoods Family Grille in Silver Bay after a recent hike up north.
The restaurant’s many Grill Wars honors adorn its menu — the apple bacon cheddar burger, the Hawaiian burger, and the maple bacon bourbon burger to name a few.
Against my better judgment, I opted to go for something lighter, and instead ordered their Northwoods Salad.
It’s jam-packed with lovely green spring mix, dangerously delicious candied pecans, craisins, poppy seed dressing and Parmesan cheese.
You can add smoked chicken or smoked salmon for a few extra bucks. I ordered the latter, which sat in abundance on the salad, tasting of quality richness.
The fresh-tasting Parmesan flakes added a grounding dry flavor to the lively sweetness of this dish that doubles as an entree and dessert.
The pecans were heavy on the candied, with a thick and rough exterior and a perfect crunch, a warm sweetness compared to the bright punch of the craisins.
The salad as a whole is a fun combination that I wouldn’t have thought up myself.
Bright, filling, one to enjoy till the last bite.
Located in a strip mall near a family dentist, the license bureau and a fitness center, the restaurant has a modern-rustic design with many pictures of the North Shore. There’s brick and stained wood palettes with a dash of street art in a spray painted logo.
Lantern-inspired pendant lights hang over booths.
As I walked out, I saw their Grill Wars trophies gracing the entryway.
“Next time,” I muttered under my breath.
