A section of London Road remains closed as crews work to replace a culvert damaged by June's floodwaters.

The culvert is between 57th and 58th avenues east, and the project has forced traffic to be detoured onto Superior Street. The repairs are expected to be completed by Aug. 25, said Derek Fredrickson, a project engineer for the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Heavy rains June 19 and 20 resulted in high flows through the culvert and dislodged both bluestone and bricks from the arched culvert, Fredrickson said.

In addition to damaging the culvert, the runoff undermined a section of London Road. Fredrickson noted that a hole had opened on the northbound shoulder of the road.

Steve Lipinski, manager of utility operations for the city of Duluth, said a water line also is being relocated as part of the project. He said the existing line was too close to the culvert and will be moved at least 5 feet away.
