Several mines on the Iron Range have resorted to cutbacks in the past few months.

* Keetac (Keewatin): U.S. Steel idled Keetac in December, putting about 380 people out of work.

* Hibtac (Hibbing): 102 positions have been eliminated since the fourth quarter of 2008. Most cuts have occurred through voluntary means such as accelerated retirements, but 35 layoffs were involuntary, and another seven involuntary cuts are expected in March, said Maureen Talarico, a spokeswoman for Cliffs Natural Resources.

* United Taconite (Forbes, Eveleth): Workers have agreed to a reduced workweek of 32 hours to avoid layoffs.

* Northshore Mining (Silver Bay): Production has been reduced without resorting to layoffs.
