A single-engine private plane with only the pilot on board nosed into the ground and flipped over attempting to land at the Hayward Airport on Monday evening.
Police, sheriff's department and fire rescue crews responded but the pilot, Alan J. Wodack, 60, of Wray, Colo., refused medical treatment.
Authorities said the plane took off from the same airport about 20 minutes before the crash and that the pilot was attempting to land in very high winds when the crash occurred just south of the runway. The accident happened about 6:20 p.m. The FAA is investigating.
