On Leadership: Great leaders remember people's names
One of the main reasons you forget someone’s name is that you’re not really focused on learning it due to other things vying for your attention.
Remembering people’s names is key to professional success in leading others. By recalling people’s names, it shows that you are interested in them so they will feel valued and respected. This leads to enhanced relationships and confidence in dealing with others.
Here are four tips for remembering names:
- Quit telling yourself you are not good at remembering names as this can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Trust yourself that remembering names is a skill you can master.
- Focus on the other person. One of the main reasons you forget someone’s name is that you’re not really focused on learning it due to other things vying for your attention.
- Exercise your memory muscle by using repetition. Tactfully use the person’s name several times in your conversation and at the end. Repeat their name silently in your mind while he or she is talking. Then later, recall their name several more times throughout the day.
- Create a favorable imprint of the person in your mind. Who is the person behind the name? What impresses you about them? When you become genuinely interested in others, you can create an association so remembering their name becomes easy.
