The explosion of a stolen trailer near the Pokegama River in the Superior Municipal Forest Monday was probably an act of arson, according to the Superior Police Department.
A vehicle was witnessed speeding south on Billings Drive toward Highway 105 shortly before the explosion. The vehicle is described as an older model early 1990s white four-door sedan with Minnesota license plates. Two males were in the car.
The enclosed, dual-axle trailer was owned by J.R. Brennan Co., a marine construction company based in La Crosse, Wis. It was filled with diving equipment to be used on a job for Minnesota Power at its hydroelectric plant in Jay Cooke State Park. It has been parked there over the weekend.
Superior Police are asking anyone with knowledge of the theft or explosion to call (715) 394-4432 or (715) 395-7468, or to text spdtip to 847411. The Esko Police Department may also be contacted.
